Dreamers Hold Funeral for Morally Backwards GOP, Declare Its Immigration Policies Inhumane and Senseless
July 21, 2014
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Dreamers from across the country held a funeral for the Republican Party, whose morally backwards policies have completely alienated the immigrant community.
Carrying a casket that read “RIP GOP” from the offices of Sen. Cruz (R-TX) to Sen. Cornyn (R-TX), dozens of Dreamers fought back against attacks on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, and shamed Republicans for using the crisis on the border to push their own political agenda.
Oliver Merino, a leader with the Dream Organizing Network, a UWD affiliate said:
“Republicans have killed immigration reform. Republicans want to strip the rights of Central American refugees and are politicizing the crisis on the border to attack DACA again, our community’s biggest victory in decades. The GOP’s only solution to the moral crisis in our community seems to be: do nothing and deport Dreamers and their parents.
“This is why today Dreamers held a funeral for the Republican Party, a party that has shown no signs of leadership and only continues cowering to right-wing extremists like Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX).
“Dreamers fought for DACA and won in 2012, and because of that I am able to work in the U.S. for the first time. But my parents still live under perpetual fear of being separated from their family. And like in 2012, we will fight again not only to keep DACA, but we are committed to fighting for an expansion of the program to include our parents as well.”
Greisa Martinez, an organizer for United We Dream said:
“We will not cry for the Republican Party. My mother will not cry because there are no tears left to shed. I’ve lived the horror of family separation when my father was deported six years ago and Republican obstructionism and inaction has kept my mother under the same threat, and this will not stand.
“The Republican Party’s only objective is to further marginalize our community by trying to pass resolutions that strip refugee children of their rights and our LGBTQ community of their right to seek asylum. The GOP will not stand for us. They will not fight for us. The GOP is dead to the immigrant community.”
