Miami, FL – Yesterday, immigrant youth leaders, donning orange shirts, together with a coalition of immigrant, community and labor organizations, rallied outside the James L. Knight Center to counter Trump’s racism and xenophobia with a celebration of our shared immigrant heritage and to protest his plans for mass deportation. The rally is part of a nationwide effort by United We Dream Action’s Honey Badger Squad who, in just the last weeks protested Marco Rubio in Miami, who they labeled a member of the “Trump Klan” for endorsing Trump, unveiled a giant banner inside of Trump Tower in Manhattan and spoke out against Trump at the Values Voter Summit in Washington, DC.
Video clips and pictures of the Miami action can be found here, here, here and here. View an archived livestream of the event here, where the public was invited to join the Honey Badger Squad themselves by texting “NEVERTRUMP” to 877-877.
Leaders were joined yesterday by a coalition consisting of Florida Immigrant Coalition—Votes, SEIU-FL, America’s Voice, AFL-CIO, iAmerica, United Families, Progressive Caucus Miami Dade, New Florida Majority and Council of American Islamic Relations in Florida.
Juan Carlos Olmos, a queer undocumented immigrant and resident of Homestead, FL, said: “We are here chanting our truth at the top of our lungs and fighting back against Trump because he is a real threat to the people of Florida and across the country. I’m motivated by the power of the people here today – immigrants, women, people of color, indigenous youth and LGBTQ folks. We are on the right side of history today and we will continue to make it clear that Donald Trump is toxic and support for him is support for hatred and racism in America.”
Mariana Martinez, a registered voter, daughter of immigrants and resident of Homestead, FL, said: “No matter how many times security pushed us away from the event, we kept marching right back through the streets with our community. We aren’t going to be silenced when we are faced with racism and the mass deportation terror of a Trump America. There is no room in this country for Trump or the political figures who support him, which is why the Honey Badgers will continue to protest Trump in Colorado on Saturday, protest Trump promoter and Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi in Orlando next week and we’re just getting warmed up!”
Juan Carlos Carabantes, a DACA recipient and resident of Homestead, FL, said: “Trump may be unpredictable but one thing is consistent — his hateful plan to mass deport immigrants like me and my family from this country. It’s shameful that he would show up in Florida, home to many immigrants and refugees, with his call to drive us out. Trump’s hatred and racism are not welcome in Florida — we are here to stay and are going to keep fighting because this is the fight for our lives!”
