Dreamers Celebrate DACA Policy while calling President Obama to Protect their Parents and the Greater Immigrant Community

WASHINGTON, D.C.  – Immigrant youth from across the country will be celebrating the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy. DACA was implemented two years ago today and it  has provided protection from deportation and work permits to more than half a million people.

Own the Dream, a project of United We Dream (UWD), has released a report celebrating the two- year anniversary of DACA. The report outlines the benefits and opportunities created by DACA to improve Dreamers’ lives and the different ways they have contributed to their community since its implementation.

“We’re excited to highlight DACA and to show the country that it works. It has lifted more than half a million of young people out of the shadows,” says Adam Luna, Own the Dream Director, “ it has provided them protection from deportation, and the ability to further contribute to the country we all call home.” says Mr. Luna

Own the Dream has successfully forged partnerships to create cutting edge resources to help vulnerable communities.

“Immigrants can use a free and easy online interview to learn more about DACA eligibility and answer the questions to fill in the forms and  apply.  More than 100,000 people have been helped by the Own the Dream website resources,” says Pat Malone, associate director at Immigration Advocacy Network,  “ it includes the screening and application interview; information about the law; and, a searchable legal directory.  www.weownthedream.org.  These free resources are created by national experts, to help more people apply and find the help they need.” says Ms. Malone

Yet it is clear that millions of undocumented immigrants also deserve the same opportunity to fulfill their dreams. This is why United We Dream pledges to continue fighting until administrative relief is extended to millions of other undocumented immigrants in the United States.

“Millions of undocumented immigrants still live in fear of deportation. Our experience with DACA shows that relief brings people out of the shadows and it resources them to contribute at a greater level to their community,” says Felipe Sousa-Rodriguez, Managing Deputy Director of United We Dream, “President Obama has a unique opportunity to build on DACA’s success and to lift millions of undocumented immigrants out of the fear of deportation. The potential beneficiaries of relief are our parents, neighbors and friends. We will fiercely wage a non-partisan fight for the dignity of our community. We won’t hesitate to hold accountable anyone who stands in the way.” Says Mr. Sousa-Rodriguez
