Dreamers sit-in Sen. Reid’s office, Demand Leadership From Democrats
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Earlier today, United We Dream leaders were arrested outside of the Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-NV) office. The young leaders were arrested while demanding that Sen. Reid show leadership and call on the President to provide relief for our families now.
Greisa Martinez, National Field Organizer for United We Dream and one of the arrestees, said
“I came to the Capitol today to demand that Senator Reid keep his word to fight for people like my mother, Elia Rosas, who has sacrificed everything for me and my three sisters. We lost our father to an unjust deportation six years ago, the most difficult moment of my life, and one that I can’t bear to re-live.
“The President’s decision to back away from his word and delay administrative relief for my family means that my mother still lives with the fear of being torn apart from her four daughters. Senator Harry Reid has said that he stands by our families. In this time of need, when the President has once again backed away from a promise to our community, we expect Leader Reid to step up and stand with us to demand relief now.”
Felipe Sousa-Rodriguez, Deputy Managing Director for United We Dream issued the following statement,”
“President Obama made a promise to the Latino, Asian Pacific Islander, and immigrant community that he would take concrete action to help immigrant communities by the end of the Summer. While the President and pundits claim that the coming election is the reason for the delay, the fact that there is an election in November shouldn’t have come as a surprise to anyone.
“The crass politics of continuously raising and dashing hopes of the Latino and immigrant community out of political convenience must end. Dreamers will hold the President’s and any other political leader’s feet to the fire until they deliver the relief that they have promised.
“The President’s decision to back away from his promise means that at least 70,000 more people will be deported.
“Senator Harry Reid courageously fought for the DREAM Act and pushed the President to stop deporting Dreamers by creating the DACA program. Now, when our families need a champion, Senator Reid has been silent despite promises that he stands for us.
“It is time for the President to act and it is time for Congressional leaders who have said they stand with us to stand up and demand that President Barack Obama deliver.”
