The anti-immigrant SAFE Act bill rises from the dead, likely only to die again
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, in what seemed like an episode from the Twilight Zone, Congress brought back to life an anti-immigrant, enforcement only bill that seeks to criminalize the entire undocumented community and put refugees and asylum-seekers on a fast track to deportation.
Lorella Praeli, Director of Policy and Advocacy for United We Dream said,
“This morning, I had to check my calendar to make sure we hadn’t traveled back in time as the House Judiciary Committee Republicans launched another attack on immigrants by moving the extreme “SAFE” Act forward, which failed in 2013 and clearly will not become a law today. Lacking any new ideas on immigration, GOP leaders seem to have no choice but to dig up already dead proposals and try to pass them off as serious ideas.
“The SAFE Act is extreme, but it has come to symbolize the GOP immigration strategy: mass deportation, criminalization of millions of immigrants like my mother, Chela Praeli, and turning local law enforcement officers into immigration agents.
“This bill would also undermine our community’s victories, like DACA which already protects more than 600,000 young immigrants, and DAPA, a program that will protect millions of parents from deportation.
“GOP Members of Congress know that our country is finally moving forward on immigration and that our community will succeed in protecting our historic victories. The GOP should leave their anti-immigrant platform where it belongs: buried six feet under.”
