GOP loads DHS funding bill with amendments to attack immigrant families
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, a vote to fund the Department of Homeland Security failed in the Senate (51-48) after Republicans attached amendments that seek to undermine President Obama’s executive actions on immigration and leave millions from the immigrant community vulnerable to deportation.
Lorella Praeli, director of policy and advocacy for United We Dream issued the following statement,
“It’s shameful that Republicans continue using anything at their disposal to attack millions of families like mine. While the GOP failed in their latest attempt to undermine executive action, they certainly succeeded in their drive to turn away the fastest growing demographic in America.
“For more than a year, the immigrant community fought for and won deportation relief for millions in our community and we’re committed to continue fighting to ensure that expanded deferred action for both immigrant youth and parents is a success.
“Executive Action on immigration works and more than 600,000 young immigrants with work permits and protection from deportation are living proof. Since 2012, our community and our country have taken big steps forward on immigration with deferred action, and we will not let Republicans, or anybody else, drag us backwards.”
