WASHINGTON, D.C. – The GOP’s far right Members of Congress are again attacking immigrants, this time by trying to rewrite the 14th amendment of the constitution that grants U.S. citizenship to anyone born on U.S. soil.
Lorella Praeli, Advocacy Director of United We Dream issued the following statement,
“The Supreme Court has made it clear: The 14th amendment means what it says. If you are born in the U.S., you are an American citizen, regardless of your parents’ immigration status.
“Even with a new majority in the Senate, Republican leader Sen. Mitch McConnell continues letting anti-immigrant members control his party’s agenda on immigration, and they’re only capable of providing solutions that end with people like my mother, and millions more, detained or deported.
“McConnell’s latest effort to appeal to the far-right extremists of his party, the GOP is bringing up anti-immigrant amendments that have failed before and will fail again.
“This strategy has only succeeded at doing one thing – alienating Latino and immigrant voters. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results. Is McConnell’s strategy insane? You decide.
