Dreamer Detained in Mississippi — Trump’s Claims on Immigration Compassion Has Proven to Be a Lie

United We Dream Press Releases

Washington, DC – Just hours after Trump’s speech to Congress, his immigration agents tracked down a young woman in Mississippi to detain and deport her. Immigrant youth are encouraging people to sign a petition to Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly demanding that Dany Vargas be released.

Know Dany’s story and know the truth about out of control immigration enforcement:

Dany came to the U.S. when she was 7 years old and was a beneficiary of the DACA program. She is now 22 and a manager at a small store — she dreams of becoming a math teacher.

ICE agents detained Dany just hours after she courageously spoke about her fear of deportation at a press conference. She was afraid because two weeks ago, ICE officers raided her home and detained both her brother and father while she hid terrified in her closet for four hours.

Like many beneficiaries of the DACA program, paying the nearly $500 in fees every two years was hard and her DACA status expired. However, she saved up, got the money together and her renewal application is now in the approval process. But because of this technicality, ICE agents tracked her down and put her into the deportation pipeline.

Trump said multiple times that people like Dany had nothing to fear and Speaker Paul Ryan looked DACA beneficiary Angelica Villalobos in the eye and said the same. Dany should have been safe, but immigration agents stopped the car she was in and said, “You know who we are, you know what we’re here for.”

Greisa Martinez, Advocacy Director for United We Dream and herself a DACA beneficiary said,

“Trump and his executive orders have unleashed the worst in immigration agents, who are going after any and all immigrants without discretion or common sense. Anyone who has doubted Trump’s mass deportation agenda need look no further than the cases of Daniela Vargas, Daniel Ramirez and so many others.

“Dany came to the US when she was 7 years old and ICE agents are trying to deport her because she was late submitting her DACA renewal application. The actions of ICE agents in this case and in the case of Daniel Ramirez are disgusting. The raids of workers and of our homes are shameful and must stop! Secretary Kelly must free these two young people and rein in his agents who are terrorizing our families.”

Jordan, Dany’s good friend, said:

“Dany is the sweetest, most caring and down to earth person I know — she would drop anything to help you. She helped me to and from work and helped me with school. That’s why I am here for her now. The whole town of Morton supports her.

“Danny is funny and passionate about being the best because she knows it is a privilege to be here. That’s why she works so hard. She got a managing position at work after just a couple months of being there. She is smart and just wants to go to school. She loves skateboarding, playing catch, and writing. She graduated 9th in her high school class, loves playing the trumpet and has many awards for her trumpet playing from high school and college as well as for academics.”
