Washington, DC – Yesterday, in a 54-43 vote, the Senate confirmed Lee Cissna as the Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
Sanaa Abrar, Policy and Advocacy Manager at United We Dream, said:
“Lee Cissna should not head up the agency charged with welcoming immigrants to America. He actively opposed the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, condemned policies that would give undocumented immigrants a pathway to citizenship, lied about the intentions of refugees seeking asylum in our country and helped Trump draft the order to kill DACA.
“USCIS used to be charged with welcoming immigrants, but it looks like Trump intends to stack its leadership with people committed to keeping immigrants out. First, he appointed the director of an anti-immigrant hate group to be the advocate for immigrants at USCIS and now has appointed Cissna as the agency’s director.
“The USCIS Director impacts the lives of every immigrant in this country and they control the personal information that DACA beneficiaries have handed over to the government – data that includes the information of former and current DACA recipients as well as our loved ones.
“United We Dream and our members have a clear message to Cissna: We will continue to fight against Trump’s anti-immigrant and white supremacist regime because we are here to stay. ”
