New York, NY – ICE is exploiting the tragic death of a woman in Queens, New York in an attempt to erode due process for immigrants. They are using this tragedy as a way to instill fear against immigrants while lying about the impact of policies that limit the collaboration between local police and ICE.
After a woman’s tragic death in Queens, New York, ICE filed a subpoena requesting information on the suspects, which would break the cities policies on collaboration with ICE.
Cristina Jiménez, Co-founder and Executive Director of United We Dream, said:
“We mourn the victim and offer our support for the Queens community dealing with this tragedy. It is disgusting to see that ICE is exploiting a human being’s death in order to further demonize all immigrants.
ICE tears families apart, they racially profile, and undercut the most fundamental civil and human rights we have. As someone who grew up in Queens and watched my brother be racially profiled by local police/NYPD, I support New York’s policy to limit local police collaboration with ICE. We should all reject this attempt by ICE to divide our community and erode due process.”
United We Dream is the largest immigrant youth-led organization in the nation, a powerful network made up of over 400,000 members and 48 affiliate organizations across 26 states. UWD’s vision is to build a multi-racial, multi-ethnic movement of young people who organize and advocate at the local and national levels for the dignity and justice of immigrants and communities of color in the United States.
