Washington, D.C. – Today, the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee voted 6-3 to advance the confirmation of Acting Secretary Chad Wolf as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Following today’s committee hearing, Wolf’s nomination will advance to the Senate floor for a vote.
Juliana Macedo do Nascimento, State and Local Policy Manager of United We Dream, said:
“During his time at DHS, Wolf has led an agenda of zero-tolerance family separation, expedited deportations, denying humanitarian protections to asylum seekers, and targeting and detaining Black Lives Matter protesters across the country. In addition, he has overseen the facilities where immigrants have undergone forced hysterectomies and where violations in COVID-19 health and safety protocols have resulted in eight known virus-related deaths.
Today’s vote to advance Wolf’s nomination is further proof that the Trump administration is trying to retroactively make Chad Wolf’s appointment as head of DHS valid. In August, the Government Accountability Office found Wolf was invalidly appointed to his current position as DHS Acting Secretary. Just today, a federal judge reinforced that Wolf has been illegitimately serving in his role.
In July, Wolf issued a memo ignoring the Supreme Court ruling on DACA, instead moving to destroy DACA. Instead of acknowledging the illegitimacy of his memo, Republican senators are trying to promote Wolf to lead DHS in an official capacity. We thank Senators Gary Peters (D-MI), Thomas Carper (D-DE) and Margaret Hassan (D-NH) who voted to oppose furthering Wolf’s nomination. Today’s committee vote to advance Wolf’s nomination was a blatant support of the vile attacks he’s helped carry out and will continue to carry out if confirmed to his position permanently. Every Senator with a conscience and who says they support immigrants should vote ‘NO’ on Chad Wolf.”
