Washington, DC – Today, the White House announced that Trump has given former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio a presidential pardon.

Cristina Jimenez, Executive Director of United We Dream said in response:

“Trump’s pardon of Arpaio is an official endorsement on racial profiling and the abuse of immigrants and people of color. It is also a slap in the face of the people in Maricopa County who voted a racist, anti-immigrant sheriff out of his job.

In his pardon, Trump touted Arpaio’s “admiral service to our Nation.” Let’s make one thing clear: Arpaio was found guilty of criminal contempt charges due to his refusal to stop traffic patrols targeting suspected undocumented immigrants. In other words: racial profiling. Arpaio made hunting down immigrants and detaining them his blood sport.

Pardon or not, Arpaio will go down in history as a white supremacist criminal known for abusing people of color. Arpaio has been stripped of his power and we are just getting started. We pledge to continue organizing for justice and for communities where all people can be safe and thrive.”
