Houston, TX – Today, dozens of immigrant youth marched to the site of US Representative John Culberson’s BBQ fundraiser and rallied outside sharing their commitment, stories of their families and the urgency that weighs heavily on the immigrant community of Texas and Congressional District 7. Rep. Culberson’s silence on the Dream Act leaves 10,000 Dream Act-Eligible young people in limbo, at risk for deportation, and anxious about the future.

Young immigrants taking action today responded to Culberson’s, “Let Texans Lead Texas” campaign slogan by wearing cowboy hats and holding Texas stars: one star for every 200 Dream Act eligible immigrant living in Culberson’s district.

Photos and video of the action are available here, here, and here.

This march follows two weeks of immigrant youth action across Texas, and the country, in Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, El Paso, Austin; multiple to demand that members of Congress commit to the future of Texas by committing to passing a clean Dream Act by December.

Damaris Gonzalez, leader with United We Dream Houston and resident of TX-7, said: “The families of Houston and Culberson’s district are watching. We need Culberson to lead boldly and commit to passing a clean Dream Act by December. Culberson has a moral decision to make — he must commit to the 10,000 young people in his district, and commit to their families and futures — we depend on it! We are not going anywhere, we are in the fight of our lives. Houston, Texas is our home, and we are here to stay!

Victor Esquivel, leader with United We Dream Houston, DACA beneficiary, and member of the LGBTQ community said: “I am here today not only to remind Culberson of his responsibility to the 10,000 lives on the line in his district, but also the hundreds of thousands across the state and country who need a clean Dream Act by December. With Trump’s decision to kill the DACA program, many from the LGBTQ community, including myself, fight for a clean Dream Act now because of what we will face in our home countries if we are deported. Culberson must stop his silence and answer the demands of Texans for a clean Dream Act! Lives are at stake, and he can help protect them! We will not back down, we will not back down! We need a clean Dream Act now!
