Washington, DC – Today, United We Dream joined together with Marielena Hincapie with the National Immigration Law Center, David Leopold, former President of the American Immigration Law Center and Lynn Tramonte with America’s Voice to explain and speak out against the outrageous order issued by Judge Andrew Hanen to collect the personal information of some immigrant youth who received three-year work permits under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA).
United We Dream members are currently collecting signatures on a petition to the Department of Justice asking that they not honor Judge Hanen’s outrageous demands and that they file a motion to remove Judge Hanen from the United States v. Texas case due to his complete impartiality.
Below are the remarks of Adrian Reyna, Director of Membership at United We Dream:
“Today, we are calling on the U.S. Department of Justice to take all appropriate steps to ensure that Andrew Hanen’s outrageous request is not honored. We are also calling on the Department of Justice to file a motion to remove Andrew Hanen from the United States v. Texas case.
“Extremists like Andrew Hanen and other Republican politicians thrive on racial division and can’t stand to see our immigrant community progress. Judge Hanen has abandoned all impartiality and launched a witch hunt seeking the names, addresses and personal contact information of teenagers and young people—people like my sister— for the sole reason of intimidating us.
“Over the coming weeks we will make our voices heard in Texas and across the country. We will make sure that everyone in our communities who can vote, will vote, because the stakes are higher now more than ever.
“We’ve been putting up with this extremism for years, but we know they are only doing this because we have power. We are not intimidated. We’re organizing. Our message to Judge Hanen and the Republican bullies who are trying to push us into the shadows and out of the country is simple: we are here to stay. Whether you like it or not.”
