Washington, D.C. – Tonight, immigrant youth of United We Dream won the Social Movement award at the fifth annual Shorty Social Good Awards for our Home Is Here video series. The Shorty Social Good Awards honors the best social media and digital content of the year.
The Home is Here series, which highlights the voices of undocumented youth, was the first-of-its-kind multi-media amicus brief submitted to the Supreme Court by United We Dream as part of the broader Home Is Here campaign, a partnership of over 100 organizations helping to protect Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients and their families. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of DACA on June 18, 2020 in favor of DACA recipients and their communities.
Juanita Monsalve, Senior Marketing and Creative Director of United We Dream Network, said:
“We are so excited and honored to receive the Shorty Social Good Award! For the last 12 years, United We Dream has been a home for immigrant youth to build independent political power and to know, and feel deep in our hearts, that WE BELONG. The Home Is Here campaign and our multimedia amicus brief to protect the DACA program was ONLY possible because we centered the leadership of undocumented and immigrant women and queer folks in front of the camera, behind the camera, in our press and digital rooms, and out on the streets.
Our power and existence is undeniable and we knew it was our duty to win. We made certain that we went down in history VICTORIOUS and in full defiance of white supremacy. As we move into 2021, we call on you to continue investing in undocumented and immigrant creatives. To co-lead with us and trust us. We are the storytellers, innovators, and protectors, we have been waiting for.
Thank you to the Shorty Social Good Awards. Thank you to all our members for celebrating with us. Thank you for building with us. Our home is here and we are here to stay!”
