Washington, D.C. – Last night, the Supreme Court refused to issue an emergency stay on a lower court’s ruling to reinstate Trump’s Remain in Mexico program.
Juliana Macedo do Nascimento, Senior Advocacy Manager of United We Dream, said:
“Last night’s unacceptable decision by the Supreme Court on Trump’s racist ‘Remain in Mexico’ program leaves President Biden with a simple question: Will he take the easy way out or will he fight back against white nationalism?
In refusing to issue an emergency stay to the racist brainchild of Trump and Stephen Miller, the Supreme Court upheld white nationalism. In their entire four years in office, the goal of the Trump administration was to find as many ways to infringe on people’s legal right to seek asylum as possible. From metering people at the border, to Title 42, and the ‘Remain in Mexico’ program – all of these were instituted in an attempt to make it harder for people, specifically Black and brown people, to seek asylum.
This ruling has real-world impact on tens of thousands of people hoping to seek asylum. Now, President Biden has a decision to make, if he is truthful about his values of building a welcoming immigration system. The Biden administration must use their executive power to fully end the ‘Remain in Mexico’ program, and every other policy, including Title 42, which is rooted in white nationalism.”
