Washington, D.C. – Today, in a bipartisan vote, the House of Representatives voted to impeach President Trump – for a second time – on the charge of inciting an insurrection against the United States, following the violent white supremacist attack that overtook the Capitol on January 6.

“Last week after a violent mob of white supremacists with the encouragement of Trump attacked the Capitol, Black women and women of color in Congress were clear-eyed about removing Trump from office to ensure the safety of the nation. The calls to impeach Trump for his continued betrayal of American democracy came swiftly and fiercely from members of Congress like Rep. Ilhan Omar, who drafted up articles of impeachment as she was locked away in a secure location, as well as other members of the squad like Reps. Ayanna Pressley, Rashida Tlaib, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Congresswoman Cori Bush also recognized the urgency of this moment by immediately introducing a resolution to investigate and expel any member of Congress who aided in inciting the violence.
Black women, and women of color in Congress, many of whom have faced threats of violence and even death against them during the entirety of their tenure, are steadfast and resolute about doing what needs to be done to protect American democracy. Their leadership for their communities, which include immigrants, Black people and other people of color, who have been under constant attack by the Trump administration are a bright light in moments shrouded in darkness. This is the kind of leadership we need as we look to transform our country.”
