Washington, D.C. – As we await the final results in the Georgia Senate runoffs between Jon Ossoff and incumbent David Perdue, United We Dream celebrates the historic victory of Reverend Dr. Raphael Warnock, Georgia’s first Black senator who also campaigned with a commitment to prioritize and protect immigrant communities. Warnock’s victory is a testament to the power of countless grassroots organizing groups, both locally and nationally, that canvassed, phone and text-banked, and leveraged social media to mobilize a record number of Black and brown voters to the polls.

Pending the results from Ossoff’s race, Democrats are likely to take control of the Senate with a 50-50 divide and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris serving as a critical tie-breaking vote.

Greisa Martinez Rosas, Executive Director of United We Dream, said:

“Across the country, we are waking up to a new reality filled with hope, power and possibility. With Democrats poised to take back control of the Senate, Rev. Warnock’s historic victory in Georgia is a reminder of the power of our vision and the Black womxn-led, multi-racial and multi-generation efforts that engaged millions of voters to alter the course of history and deliver tangible change to people’s lives.

With Jon Ossoff’s expected victory adding to Rev. Warnock’s win, each of our demands must be a top priority for Democrats. We are fighting to defund ICE and CBP, to hold these agencies accountable for the pain and deaths of immigrants they’ve caused, and for citizenship for the 11 million undocumented people living in the U.S. There is no time for excuses. We need swift, bold action from Democrats to deliver protections now.

I am honored to work alongside fierce and courageous organizers who are constant reminders that together, we can and will win protections and dignity for all our people across every single state. Millions have joined us in our fight and we will continue to win.”

Ever since their creation, ICE and CBP have targeted, detained, abused and deported immigrants while separating loved ones and tearing apart communities. Donate 21 dollars to help us fight back against the 21 years of terror.
