The Trump administration has a sinister new plan to further its efforts to criminalize and disenfranchise low-income immigrants of color, and redirect millions more dollars to increase mass detention and deportation. He will raise fees on DACA renewal applications, citizenship applications, and for the first time ever, create an asylum fee for refugees. What’s more, $112 million of money raised with these fees will then be transferred to increase ICE’s budget for two years. This immoral fee increase will make it easier for ICE to detain, deport and torture even more immigrants.
How Can We Stop This?
We need thousands of people to submit comments to USCIS against this proposal! We only have until February 10th to submit comments, before they decide whether to approve this fee increase. Personalized comments have a much bigger impact and can help stop this proposal from ever seeing the light of day.
On November 14, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) published a proposed rule that would dramatically raise the cost of vital immigration relief – including DACA renewals, citizenship application fees, and asylum petitions – making it more difficult, and in some cases impossible, for many people to apply. The proposed rule would also unlawfully transfer approximately $112 million dollars from USCIS to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) without Congress’ approval for two years.
Why is This Bad?
For many, this proposed rule would mean getting in more debt, working longer hours, and sacrificing other important needs for themselves and their families.
This is Trump’s attempt to exclude working-class immigrants and their families, who rely on these protections to live and thrive.
The money gained from this fee increase will directly increase ICE & CBP’s already gigantic budget to terrorize more immigrants and break our communities apart.
This is the first time ever in the United State’s history that a fee would be required for asylum applications. Refugees who are already running away from terrible situations would now have to pay to attempt to find safety.
Top 5 Things You Need to Know About Trump’s Newest Scheme!
On November 14, US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) proposed a plan to increase costs for immigrants trying to renew their DACA, apply for asylum, or applying to citizenship through naturalization. USCIS also proposed transferring over $112 million per year to ICE to fund more detentions and deportations. Here’s what you need to know:
The proposal is NOT in effect yet. The government is still gathering comments from the public until February 10, 2020 and will have to review them before issuing a final decision. We do not know when or if it’ll be implemented yet.
Increasing fees for DACA & Naturalization. The DACA renewal fee would increase by 55% to $765. This means some DACA recipients may not be able to renew their status and will become vulnerable to deportation. If you are able to, you should apply for your DACA renewal now. The filing fee for naturalization will also increase to $1,170. That’s an 83% jump, making citizenship inaccessible to low-income people.
New Fees for Refuge. The rule would impose a new $50 fee for new asylum seekers who come to this country looking for refuge. This would make the U.S. one of only 4 countries in the world that charge for asylum!
ICE will get more money. This new rule would use these fees to send more money to ICE and transfer $112 million into the agency that terrorizes immigrant communities. USCIS wants to take money from immigrants and fund the deportation force - this is vile and unacceptable!
