Washington, D.C. — In response to the White House’s $105 billion supplemental budget request dedicated to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which includes funds to increase ICE and CBP’s power and funds to continue attacks by the Israeli military in Gaza, Republican Senators have introduced an anti-immigrant bill. This new bill in exchange would restrict border access to migrants seeking safety and set prohibitive standards for seeking asylum.
Juliana Macedo do Nascimento, Deputy Director of Federal Advocacy at United We Dream said:
“Congress must be steadfast in their rejection of the White House Supplemental request and to the anti-immigrant demands by MAGA Republicans in the Senate and House. Rather than more funding for increased detention and militarization at the border, we need more resources to ensure safety and dignity for migrants. The attempt to tack on additional anti-immigrant policy changes by the Senate Republicans to deny migrants their right to seek asylum is a dangerous distraction in these critical moments.
We demand funding for disaster relief, humanitarian aid, and proper support for border communities. We reject the adjoining militarization that would restrict border access, set tight limits on asylum seekers, and perpetrate violence at our borders and abroad. We call on Congress to approve support that helps immigrants without hurting immigrants.”
