Immigrant MadeVolume 2

Dear immigrant community,

We’re back with another volume of the zine made by us and for us. Across the country, our communities have been the targets of conservatives’ efforts to try to stamp out and erase the contributions of Black, brown, and immigrant leaders in literature, culture, arts, and education, including through legislative bans against books documenting the lived experiences and stories of Black, Indigenous, people of color, and immigrant authors.

But even in the midst of all those attacks, I want to remind you that the zine you are holding in your hands is living proof of our power. It affirms that our voices matter and that they are paramount to paving a new future that includes and cares for us all. For over a decade, the immigrant youth that power United We Dream have disrupted the public’s expectations of what it means to be an immigrant. We continue that mission within these pages.

Foreword

Dear immigrant community,

The zine made by us and for us is back.

For this volume, we’ve brought together another multi-racial group of proud immigrant writers and artists who believe in the inherent worth and dignity of immigrants. Across each new poem and essay, they demonstrate how being an immigrant is about the discipline of hope that empowers us to summon a future that remains to be seen.

As immigrants, we must be at the forefront of redefining, preserving and protecting our culture. After you’ve finished reading this zine, we call on you to make, define, and grow what is rightfully ours – our traditions, our histories, our experiences – and to tell the world who we are as immigrants. It’s up to all of us to imagine and create a joyous and liberated world.

We thank all of our UWD staff and members for their collective efforts to bring Immigrant Made, Volume 2 to life. We also thank the Writers Guild Initiative and their cohort of professional writing mentors: Richard Dresser, Jenna Jackson, Chiara Montalto-Giannini, Alaudin Ullah, Colleen Werthmann, James Anthony Tyler, Jorge Corona, Mel Nieves, Pam Katz, Ren Dara Santiago, Stephen Ruddy, Susanna Styron and Craig “Mums” Grant, may he Rest In Peace. Thank you for empowering our youth to cherish and celebrate their cultural power!

When white supremacists and politicians attempt to destroy stories about us, we write and breathe life into our own. We are immigrants and our culture is power!

This March marks 21 years of ICE CBP & DHS terrorizing our immigrant communities.

Ever since their creation, ICE and CBP have targeted, detained, abused and deported immigrants while separating loved ones and tearing apart communities. Donate 21 dollars to help us fight back against the 21 years of terror.
