Washington, D.C. – Today, the Biden administration announced an appeal to a federal court ruling asking them to allow them to continue using the Trump-era Title 42 policy. This news comes as over 50 lawmakers are calling on President Biden to halt deportations of Black immigrants to Haiti.

Juliana Macedo do Nascimento, Senior Advocacy Manager of United We Dream, said:

“Did I blink and Trump suddenly become President again?

No, he didn’t, which makes the news today that President Biden is choosing to defend the racist Trump-era Title 42 policy shocking and disappointing. It is unfathomable that the Biden administration would fight in court to keep Title 42 – a pillar of Stephen Miller and Trump’s white nationalist agenda – in place. President Biden, you have a choice to make right now: either continue to deny Black and brown immigrants their legal right to asylum by fighting to keep Title 42 in place or be a champion for immigrants by ending the cruelties of detention and deportation. You cannot do both.

Let’s also not forget that despite a tragic and devastating earthquake last month that forced hundreds of thousands to seek safety in the U.S, the Biden administration has restarted mass deportations and expulsions of Black immigrants to Haiti. The Biden administration must immediately reverse this decision, stop the use of Title 42, and stop detaining, deporting and expelling immigrants.”
