Washington, D.C. – This week, the Senate is expected to vote on whether to grant immigration enforcement agencies an additional $70 billion of taxpayer resources to fund mass detentions and deportations. This $70 billion would be on top of the already colossal $170 billion slush fund Congress approved for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) last year.
Ahead of the Senate’s expected vote on the reconciliation bill, United We Dream released the following statement:
“It is indefensible that Congress would even consider throwing away billions more in taxpayer dollars for deadly immigration enforcement when millions of people and families are being crushed by rising costs and barely scraping by. Families can hardly keep up with their bills. Gas prices are soaring everywhere and well above $5 a gallon in some places. And tens of thousands of people –from airline workers to DACA recipients facing renewal delays– are left without jobs and no income through no fault of their own.
Delivering for all working people and making sure our communities have what they need to live should be Congress’ sole focus, not writing blank checks to the very immigration agencies responsible for causing chaos at our airports and wreaking havoc and violence on our streets. We urge the Senate to reject any more funding for DHS’ slush fund and commit to delivering stability for working people now.”
