Washington, D.C. – Yesterday, a federal judge in Louisiana indicated his intent to temporarily block the Biden administration from winding down the evil and racist Title 42 policy by the end of next month. Judge Robert Summerhays’ decision is the latest in a series of Republican court-led efforts aimed at hindering the Biden administration’s plans to restore the right to asylum.

Juliana Macedo do Nascimento, Deputy Director of Federal Advocacy of United We Dream, said:

“What we are witnessing right now across the country is a deliberate and insidious overreach by Republican-led states in the courts to intervene in President Biden’s efforts to restore the right to asylum for Black and brown migrants. It is a human right to seek asylum, and it is a legal right that courts everywhere should be on the side of protecting.

The Biden administration’s decision to end Title 42 is the right and lawful decision. Restoring asylum and protecting the lives of millions of Black and brown families and children is the right and lawful decision. Ensuring we welcome everyone with dignity, humanity, and respect is the right and lawful decision. The federal judge in Louisiana does not represent the vast majority of people in this country who are eager and ready to welcome those seeking safety with the humanity and dignity they deserve. President Biden must stand by his word and boldly reject every dangerous and cunning effort to delay ending the evils of Title 42.”
