Washington, D.C. – In a deeply alarming and catastrophic ruling today, the U.S. Supreme Court has sided with the administration in its ploy to ramp up mass deportations by ending temporary protections and rendering hundreds of thousands of people in our communities deportable. In an 7-2 decision, with Justices Jackson and Sotomayor dissenting, the Supreme Court submitted to the administration’s heinous efforts to revoke legal temporary protected status for more than 500,000 people from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela, throwing into question the safety and lives of these individuals and their families, and the future of other temporary programs including the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
In response to this breaking news, United We Dream released the following statement:
“As we approach the 13th anniversary of the DACA program in just a matter of weeks, today’s Supreme Court ruling is a blaring siren that the future of other programs are under extreme threat. Since day one, the administration has made clear its goals to carry out the largest-scale mass deportation operation our country has ever seen. In order to meet its colossal deportation quota, the administration has made it a top priority to chip away at and entirely gut temporary programs, from revoking Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Afghans to now destroying the CHNV parole program.
While today’s ruling will have an immense impact on the lives of American families, we know that courage and resilience in this moment lies in us as working people who power this country. We are ready to show up for each other and fight to keep our communities whole. Now more than ever, Congress must deliver permanent protections for millions of people who are part of our society and defend a future where families never have to live in fear of being separated, where our immigration system is fair and equitable, and where our communities can truly thrive.”
