Washington, D.C. – Today, the Senate Budget Committee released toplines for its proposed budget reconciliation package, which includes a pathway to citizenship for millions of undocumented people.
Greisa Martinez Rosas, Executive Director of United We Dream, said:
“Today, due to the power of our movement, we are within reach of winning a pathway to citizenship for millions of undocumented people this year. All year our movement has fought and pushed President Biden and Congressional Democrats to recognize immigrants as critical to this country’s infrastructure, and deliver a pathway to citizenship by any means necessary.
The onus is on Democrats to make citizenship a reality this year by any means necessary, and to be bolder in their response to our care economy and the climate crisis so all of us can thrive. Right now, millions of undocumented workers continue to put their lives on the line, facing extreme heat and the deadly consequences of climate change in the Pacific Northwest, to provide for their communities amidst the pandemic, all while continuing to face the threat of deportation.
After nearly 35 years of inaction from Congress on citizenship, Democrats must hold strong and fight against bad faith negotiations. Republicans continue to exploit millions by holding citizenship hostage, all while pushing to put our communities on a path to deportation. Democrats can break this cycle and deliver – no excuses! Our communities won’t accept anything less than permanent protections for millions this year.”
