Washington, D.C. — In a catastrophic decision that jeopardizes the futures of millions of people, the United States Supreme Court ruled 6-3 in favor of the Trump Administration to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for individuals from Haiti and Syria. To date, the Administration has terminated TPS for 14 of the 17 designated countries, impacting over 1.3 million people. This September, TPS holders from Sudan, Ukraine and El Salvador also face the imminent risk of their legal status being terminated.
CASA, National TPS Alliance, and Haitian Bridge Alliance will be hosting a rapid response rally and press conference outside the U.S. Supreme Court today at 2:00 p.m. EST.
In response to today’s Supreme Court, United We Dream issued the following statement:
“There is no question that we are witnessing the largest delegalization effort in modern U.S. history unfold before us. Paving the way to end TPS for Haiti and Syria, today’s Supreme Court decision is devastating proof that the administration is dismantling legal and successful programs like TPS, DACA, asylum and humanitarian protections in order to pursue its mass deportation agenda. Not only is this decision catastrophic for the 1.3 million TPS holders who are established members in our communities, but also for the 2.3 million U.S. citizen family members with loved ones who have TPS.
TPS holders have never been temporary in our communities. They are our neighbors, coworkers, family members and working people who this country has openly depended on for their labor, care and contributions for decades, only to cast them aside when it becomes politically convenient.
The question before Congress is bigger than whether they will defend TPS. It is whether they will defend the lives and rights of all working people in this country, immigrants included, who continue to be treated as disposable by those in the highest seats of power. Citizenship is the only durable solution to protect millions of working people from the whims of political agendas that threaten the safety and stability of millions of Americans.”
