Build Community Power Guide

The Moment:

We, the people, power this country. When any one of us is attacked, people across the country are there for each other. No matter how much they try to crush us, we’re not going anywhere. We know that we can only make it out of this moment by moving together–it’s time to get organized.

What we’re witnessing now is proof that Americans of all backgrounds –from young people to elders, from children to parents, and immigrants to U.S. citizens– are standing proud and united with their communities. We refuse to be divided and we reject the blatant cruelty and violence being inflicted on our immigrant neighbors. This moment is about ALL OF US and how we show up for each other.

The days, weeks and months ahead are going to challenge us. We have already seen the ways the administration has met our communities with force, rubber bullets, and tear gas grenades. As we stand with signs, peacefully gathering to defend immigrants, they show up with soldiers in military combat gear. Their plans are to escalate. To stoke violence. And to silence us by trying to squash our constitutional rights to speak out.

Our Powered by the People Organizing Campaign was dreamed up by young people, who know that in this time what we most is each other. We are one. This is about all of us. We power each other. With love, tenacity and unshakeable commitment to show up & fight for what we deserve. Each of us plays a vital role in strengthening our collective call for justice and building a better future where we are able to live freely, with dignity, with safety, and with our loved ones.

So our mission is clear: we need to come together. We need to be in community with each other: our friends, our coworkers, our neighbors, and communities because our nation depends on the power of everyday people – you, me, and those around us– choosing courage over fear, choosing love and hope over hate and division.

Through this guide, we’re providing you the tools to build community power through organizing & powerful conversations. See below for our guide on how to bring your community together and activities you can do together!

Our ask for you: Use this moment to build community power! Gather your friends, co-workers, or loved ones – and let’s talk about the moment that we’re facing and what small actions we can each do to build the future we need!

Hosting is simple & powerful.

Invite your community members, friends, close family & circles to come together & make meaning of this moment. Powerful discussions have the ability to drive people power & we need you to be a leader in the movement guiding the narrative.

  1. Gather Your People
Invite a small group of friends, family, or neighbors. It could be 3 people or 10. What matters is creating space for connection. You can do this at a local coffee shop, BIPOC owned restaurant, at a public park or even in your living room.
  2. Print & Prep
Download and print the coloring pages from the toolkit. Grab some crayons, markers, snacks & drinks! Whatever makes it feel welcoming and fun.
  3. Create the Vibe
Set the tone for real & powerful conversations. You’re not leading a workshop–just holding space for honest connection while folks color & connect.
  4. Use the Guided Questions
Pick 2–3 questions from the list to spark your discussion. These prompts are designed to help your group reflect, dream, and imagine new ways to build power together.
  5. Wrap with Purpose
End by inviting folks to share one takeaway or action they want to carry forward. Remind them: our power grows when we build it together.

Questions to guide your discussion:

  • There has been a clear and blatant escalation of attacks happening against everyday working people and families nationwide. Attacks on immigrants. Efforts to rip Medicaid from individuals and families. Ploys to give billionaires massive tax breaks at our expense. Gutting education and even firing some of the most trusted experts on medicine, climate disaster, and more from all levels of government. Why do you think these attacks are happening?
  • What is the purpose, and what is our opposition trying to gain from these attacks?
  • How have you seen young people, students, etc. responding to what’s happened in LA? What about in our own community/state?
  • What does it mean to build collective resilience in this moment? Why is it important?
  • What do young people need right now?
  • If we all come together, what could the future look like for immigrants & people of color?
  • What is one positive thing you want to see in the future?

Don’t forget to close your conversation by inviting folks to reflect on how they see themselves supporting immigrant communities at their own capacity. What impact can they create?

Now is the time to lean on one another, organize, and fight for the future our communities deserve. No matter how many attacks they throw at us, they will never break us. This is our home. We belong here. We will win.

This March marks 21 years of ICE CBP & DHS terrorizing our immigrant communities.

Ever since their creation, ICE and CBP have targeted, detained, abused and deported immigrants while separating loved ones and tearing apart communities. Donate 21 dollars to help us fight back against the 21 years of terror.
