What You Need to Know About the Supreme Court’s Ruling on TPS

The U.S. Supreme Court just handed down a devastating ruling to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti and Syria. Here is what you need to know:

This is the largest delegalization effort in modern U.S. history.

TPS provides temporary protection from deportation to people from countries experiencing armed conflict, natural disasters, or other extraordinary conditions.

Since taking office, the  Trump Administration has moved to terminate TPS for 14 of the 17 protected countries, impacting over 1.3 million people.

In September of this year, 3 more countries –Sudan, Ukraine, and El Salvador– are at imminent risk of their legal status being terminated too.

Mass deportation depends on mass delegalization.

For months, the Administration has been aggressively dismantling legal and successful programs like TPS, DACA, asylum and humanitarian protections in order to render millions of people deportable.

Whether it’s the Supreme Court ruling to end TPS outright for certain countries, the efforts to slowly chip away at DACA, or redefine birthright citizenship in the constitution, the goal is the same: push millions of people out of status and redefine who “gets” to be an American.

TPS holders have never been temporary in our communities.

They are our neighbors, coworkers, family members and working people who this country has openly depended on for their labor, care and contributions for decades, only to cast them aside when it becomes politically convenient.

Citizenship is the ONLY solution and Congress must deliver.

Congress cannot claim ignorance as mass delegalization attacks intensify. The only durable solution is citizenship now.
