United We Dream is leaving X, formerly Twitter, by the end of 2024. Over the past two years, X has turned into an echo chamber of disinformation, anti-immigrant hate, and violent propaganda to accelerate fabricated support of fascist and authoritarian ideals.
While some in our communities will continue to use the platform to communicate, we strongly believe and urge everyone, progressives, allies, and reporters, to leave the platform with us.
If you want to leave with us, here is the process we recommend:
- Set your account to “Private”
- The first thing you want to do is lock your account so that potential new followers know that you are no longer engaging on your account. To do this, you can go on Settings > Privacy and Safety > Audience, media, and tagging > Check the box that says “Protect your posts.”
- Stop posting and interacting on the platform
- You can now stop posting and engaging on the platform. If you have a large following, consider sending one last post letting your followers know where they can find you now.
- Download Your Data
- Before you delete your account, you’ll want to download all the data of all your tweets. That way, you’ll have a record of all your thoughts and content you have ever tweeted. To do this, you can submit a request to download your data. Settings > Your Account > Download an archive of your data
- You will be emailed when your data is ready to download—within a couple of days to a couple of weeks. Download your data and save it to your records—your tweets are now yours to reference anytime you want!
- Consider Deleting Your Account
- You can now deactivate your account. To permanently delete your account. To do this, you can go to Settings > Your Account > Deactivate your account
- This will remove your handle, your tweets, and any engagement from the website. After doing this, you can delete the app from your phone to fully unplug from the website.
- Open a BlueSky and/or Threads Account
